Altitude and elevation: what is the difference?
Standing on the ground, your altitude and your elevation are the same number: your height above mean sea level. The words split once you leave the ground. Elevation is the height of the land, and altitude is the height of whatever is above it. That is why this tool shows the ground height, and why it reads the valley below you, not your seat, on a flight. For the same tool in elevation terms, see What is my elevation?
Three ways a device works out altitude
Terrain data: looks up the ground height at your coordinates. This page uses it.
GPS: measures height from satellites. It works anywhere, including in the air, but it is the weakest part of a GPS fix.
Barometer: converts air pressure to height, which is how an altimeter works. It is excellent for changes, such as how far you climbed, but it drifts when the weather changes. Altitude from pressure

The higher you go, the less air is above you. Standard-atmosphere values:
Press “Find my altitude” at the top of this page and allow location access. It shows your height above sea level in feet and meters from a global terrain model, plus your device’s own GPS altitude if it reports one.
How do I find my altitude on my iPhone?
Open the Compass app; recent iPhones show your elevation at the bottom of the screen. You can also open this page in Safari. Both work without any app to install.
How do I find my altitude on an Android phone?
Android has no built-in altitude screen on most phones. Open this page in Chrome and allow location, or use an altimeter app.
Is altitude the same as elevation?
On the ground, yes: both mean height above sea level. Strictly, elevation describes the ground and altitude describes something above it, such as an aircraft or a balloon.
What altitude am I at on a plane?
This page reads the ground below you, so it will not show cruising height. Your phone’s GPS altitude line can work by a window in airplane mode with location on. Airliners usually cruise between 30,000 and 40,000 ft.
Why is my GPS altitude different from this number?
GPS measures height against a mathematical model of the Earth, not sea level, and height is the least precise part of a GPS fix. Differences of 30–100 ft are common. The terrain value is usually steadier for where you stand.
