How this elevation finder works

Your browser gives the page your latitude and longitude. The page then downloads one small terrain tile for that spot and reads the height of the ground from it — the same open elevation data used by many hiking and mapping apps. No account, no app, and your coordinates are not sent to our server.

Elevation and air pressure

Air pressure drops as you go up: about 1 inHg (34 hPa) for every 1,000 ft near sea level, a little less higher up. That is why the tool also shows the standard pressure for your elevation — roughly what an uncorrected barometer reads where you are. Weather reports correct that to sea level; see today’s barometric pressure for the live sea-level reading near you.

Why phones disagree about elevation

A phone mixes three sources: GPS (good for position, weak for height), its barometer sensor if it has one (excellent for changes, but drifts with the weather), and map data. If your phone and this page differ by more than a few dozen feet, trust the terrain value for the ground height and the barometer for how much you climbed on a hike. Which phones have a barometer

Frequently asked questions

What is my elevation right now?

Press “Find my elevation” at the top of this page and allow location access. The page looks up your coordinates in a global terrain model and shows your elevation above sea level in feet and meters. Nothing is stored or sent to us except the map tile request.

How do I find my elevation on my iPhone or Android phone?

Open this page in your phone’s browser and tap “Find my elevation”. On iPhone the Compass app also shows elevation at the bottom of the screen. Phones with a barometer sensor can track changes in height precisely, but they need a reference like this page for the absolute number.

How accurate is this elevation?

The terrain model is built from national survey data where available (such as the USGS 3DEP data in the US) and satellite radar elsewhere. On open ground it is usually close to surveyed heights; on steep slopes, in dense cities and near cliffs the value can differ by tens of feet, and your location fix adds its own error.

Why is my GPS altitude different from my elevation?

GPS altitude is measured against an idealized ellipsoid, not sea level, and it is the least precise part of a GPS fix, often off by 30–100 ft. Elevation from a terrain model is tied to mean sea level, so it is usually the steadier number for where you stand.

What is the difference between elevation and altitude?

Elevation is the height of the ground above mean sea level. Altitude is the height of something above a reference, such as an aircraft above sea level or above the ground. Standing on the ground, your altitude and elevation are the same.

Can I check the elevation of another place or an address?

Yes. Type the latitude and longitude into the coordinates box (you can copy them from any map app by long-pressing a spot), or pick one of the cities in the list.
